What makes a really good logo?

Posted by markbowley on August 14, 2009 in Our thoughts

Logos are a particular passion of mine and with each one that catches my eye I always find myself asking how effective it is. But what exactly makes a logo really good? Of course, this has been debated the world over, but every designer has his own views which define the way he or she works.

Here are 5 things I believe a logo should be, in order to be considered very good:

  1. Iconic
  2. Memorable
  3. Adaptable
  4. Appropriate
  5. Timeless

The V&A logo above is one of my favourites, designed by the late Alan Fletcher, and has all of these 5 things. It’s still in use today 20 years after it was designed.

I’m going to write a little article about each of the 5 things listed above over the coming weeks, to explain what I mean by each and why it’s important to logo design.
