A really basic guide to social media

social sites A really basic guide to social media
There are so many social media guides and blogs out there right now, it’s almost a whole industry. But I’ve always found it takes quite a bit of reading before you can really get a sense of what each of the major network is about. I wondered how regular users summarise them to non-users?

So I did a bit of digging and asked the question on a forum – the result is this really basic intro to the big three:

Twitter

What is it? A networking service allowing short text updates for your followers.

  • Use keyword searches to track chatter on your subject areas and get involved.
  • Find new friends and business by getting involved in conversations.
  • Anyone can follow anyone’s updates, so popular subjects can go viral quickly.
  • Completely public – anyone can read your updates without needing your permission.
  • Don’t use it to hard sell – it’s about being genuine and interesting.

Some things to remember

Before jumping in to social media or setting your expectations, it’s worth remembering what it’s all about:

Chris Hall of Cow Bell points out this:

“These [social sites] are just the places online where relationships start. Things only really start to move forward when these relationships are forged in direct conversation and meeting.”

Jo Porritt of Brand Guardian reminds us:

“It isn’t about the quantity with social media but the quality. Don’t forget this about community building… be prepared to commit your business to this and you will see results!”
